Sweetened Kefir

Kefir with HoneyBecause, sometimes the simplest method is the best.
A kefir recipe site would not be complete without mentioning how amazing kefir is with just a little bit of sweetening.  Traditionally, kefir is consumed on its own rather than in a recipe, and with good reason.  It didn’t take long for the shepards of the Caucasus Mountains to realize that with a little bit of honey, kefir is a delicious treat on its own.  And people have been drinking it that way ever since.  Well, at least we think that is how it happened.  But not knowing exactly where kefir comes from makes it difficult to make that statemet without a slight disclaimer.  See our history page for more info on that subject.

There is no wrong way to sweeten kefir.  Common methods include sugar, maple syrup and agave, but I have always preferred mine with honey.  Somehow, it just seems more traditional that way.

  • 1 cup kefir
  • 1 teaspoon of honey

Simply stir or blend together, and enjoy.
